In this paper, I wish to explore the concept of happiness as well as Aristotle’s take on it. I think for most of us, we rarely stop and think about what happiness is even though we cannot deny its inevitable existence. It is one of my major points that everyone has a different definition of what happiness is or what happiness means to them, and that definition changes along with time, when.
Aristotle The determination of human behavior and how they are acquired by individuals is very controversial. While certain scientist believe that hereditary is the sole contributor to the behavior and personality of individuals, other philosophers have often disagreed with this idea stating that it is the environment that determines an individual behavior.
The highest good for man must be Eudaimonia. Happiness is self-sufficient and is an end in itself, not a means to a further or higher end (11). Therefore, there cannot be a higher good for man. Aristotle states that eudaimonia is activity that engages and displays excellence that is characteristic of a human being.
In one paragraph, I just list everything Aristotle advocates is required to live a happy life (ie. virtuous actions, choices made with deliberation, doctrine of the mean, etc.) and in the other, I list all of the principles that Mill talks about (ie. greatest happiness principle, principle of utility) as well as other stuff about consequences and collective happiness.
Aristotle holds that Eudaimonia involves a synergy, which comprises of both well acting and well feeling. This means that; an individual can only act well when he or she feels well. The idea behind Eudaimonia is concerned with a good feeling derived from acting well. This feeling can be attained when an individual experiences a warm glow.
